San Antonio – March 29, 2023 – St. Anthony Catholic High School is proud to announce that Girls Basketball Head Coach William “Chris” Collins has been named the 2023 Spurs Sports Academy Jr. NBA Coach of the Year in the scholastic category. Coach Collins was honored on March 18, 2023, during the Austin Spurs game held here in San Antonio at the AT&T Center.
According to the Spurs organization, winners of the award exemplify Spurs values – integrity, success and caring while teaching teamwork, respect, determination and community.
“Coach Collins has made a tremendous impact in his first year as our Head Girls Basketball Coach leading the girls to the second round of the regional play-offs,” says Dr. Kristina Vidaurri, principal of St. Anthony Catholic High School. “He was instrumental in building a solid team on and off the court. We are blessed to have him with us.”
“I actually found out about the award by a call from the director of the event,” says Collins. “I had no clue. I was really honored and shocked. I have been doing this for so long and have accomplished so much but never a coach of the year honor.”
Originally from Kansas City, Kansas, Collins has been coaching basketball for more than twenty years. He just completed his first year of coaching at St. Anthony. Collins says he has coached at every level from grassroots to adults and he gives all the credit to others for this award.
“I would have to thank God first,” concludes Collins. “And tell all of the players and supporters… thank you, thank you and thank you. This honor was only made possible by them trusting me and going out and proving the doubters wrong.”
